If you sit down to work every day at a space that is cluttered, furnished with gear you sourced from Facebook Marketplace, and that feels like an afterthought, it is time for a home office refresh. It doesn’t take much to turn that functional furniture into something you enjoy. I paid nothing for much of my office furniture. But I did spend some time, creativity, and money dressing it up so that I enjoy going to work.

Here are some ideas to help you get started on your own home office refresh project.

Paint that ugly desk

I picked up an old Steelcase desk from a business that was going under. The desk is solid, has beautiful hardware, and is huge. It was ugly, though. It looked like something that had made people miserable in office jobs for years. So I painted it my favorite color, replaced the knobs with something fun, and adorned it with decals.

I love it. And it cost me, in total, $25 in paint and decor. This chalk style paint goes on easily, covers anything, and looks amazing. It comes in so many colors, you are sure to find your favorite.

Create some satisfying order

Clutter is not a good look. Drawers that are full of random items that you will never find again will not boost your productivity. Drop this 20-piece drawer organizer into your desk drawers and make a place for everything so you can put everything in its place. It comes in two color schemes.

Add elegant lighting

Harsh overhead lighting, inadequate lighting, and bad lighting won’t help with your mood or productivity. But pools of targeted light are nice. They create a Zen feel while lighting what you need to see. This cordless table lamp is perfect for a desk. It’s rechargeable so it won’t drag wires into your workspace and throws a pool of dimmable illumination wherever you want.

Swap the drawer pulls for something fun

My office has an octopus theme. Tentacles wrap around my desk and these octopus drawer pulls grace the front of it.

Maybe you prefer a different sea creature?

These are hefty, big, and beautiful. They transformed the look of my desk and make me smile every day. They are a fast, easy, and stunning home office refresh.

Use wall decals to define your space

Whether you dress your furniture or the walls of the space your office is in with these wall decals, the result will charm you every day you go to work.

Peel and stick them to the walls to create a garden that’s unique to your space. They are easy to remove later if you are fickle and want to do another home office refresh next year.

Create some soft lighting with fairy lights

Fill a glass jar with these LED fairy lights to create a pretty, glowing lamp. Wrap them around your furniture. Hang them from the ceiling.

The tiny lights create a warm, diffused, distributed lighting in your space that softens the mood. If you have enough of them, you can turn the overhead light off — or dim it way down — to create calm lighting.

Use wallpaper to dress up a filing cabinet

I picked up an old filing cabinet for $25 at a used store. (They are always out there.) The storage is amazing, not only for files. And it creates a room divider that spells out where my office is in my open-plan layout.

It even looks gorgeous because, when I did my home office refresh, I covered it with this peel and stick wallpaper. It went on easily, stuck beautifully, and transformed that piece in about 10 minutes. It comes in five colors and is thick so it’s easy to work with.

Hang a few plants

I hung this macrame plant hanger from the ceiling and set a few plants on it to define my office area and bring a garden to my workspace. You could put anything on the three shelves, though. They take up no floor space, are super affordable, and would work as a room divider if hung in a grouping.

Use floor tiles instead of a chair mat

If you are trying to protect your floors from your office chair or even if you want a better, smoother, prettier, floor in your home office, these vinyl floor tiles are a great option. They come in 11 colors, are easy to lay down, and can be removed later. (Some reviewers suggest installing them on top of contact paper for easy removal later.)

Get a pretty office chair

I have this beautiful office chair with a wooden back in my home office. The seat is wide and comfy. The back adjusts. And it looks pretty from the front or the back.

I don’t mind having a home office if it melds with the look of my space. This chair seems to pull it all together. The wooden back looks great. The fabric seat goes with everything else I have. It’s not perfect, ergonomically, but its not bad and it encourages me to get up and move a lot. It comes in six colors.
